The Stephanskirche is an important late Gothic building. It was also the largest building erected in the course of the expansion of the city into a princely residence in the late 15th century.

The foundation stone was laid in 1486 during the reign of Duke Johann I (1480-1509). This is an extension of an older facility, the remains of which can still be found under the tower. The St. Anna chapel with the grave monuments of the Simmern dukes is located on the southern aisle.

Other funerary monuments are located in the chancel of the church. They are among the most famous examples of Renaissance culture between Mainz and Trier. The sculptors are attributed to Jacob Kerre (around 1520) from Koblenz, Johann von Trarbach (1530-1586) and a still unknown master from Simmern. Under the bell tower is another crypt with the coffins of the last Simmern princely couple (Duke Ludwig Heinrich 1673 and Maria von Oranien 1688).

The organ comes from the workshop of the organ builder family Stumm from Sulzbach.

The Evangelical Stephanskirche is a late Gothic hall church in Simmern/Hunsrück in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate. It belongs to the Simmern evangelical parish in the Simmern-Trarbach church district of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland and is known for its numerous grave monuments of the Dukes of Palatinate-Simmern, which are among the most valuable sculptural works on the Middle Rhine.
The cornerstone for the former castle church was laid in 1486 by Duke Johann I von Pfalz-Simmern, whose death in 1506 apparently meant that the building was essentially complete. The church is a large three-nave hall church in the character of the Bavarian buildings of the time, which is equipped with a single-nave choir with a five-eighth note. On the north side the chancel is flanked by the tower and the sacristy, on the south side by the ducal burial chapel. The current appearance of the tower dates from a renovation in 1716 and is characterized by an octagonal belfry with a voluminous dome. In 1689, when the city was destroyed, the spire and the roof truss of the church were burned. The Simultaneum was introduced in 1689 and the choir and church were separated by a wall (until 1842). The western porch is modern. Large, transversely divided tracery windows are arranged on the outer walls of the nave and chancel. The buttresses on the nave are drawn inwards, only narrow, pilaster-like strips divide the wall on the outside.
The interior is highly proportioned and heavily emphasized in the longitudinal direction. The nave is optically separated from the narrow side aisles by strong octagonal pillars. The chancel is as wide as the nave, but raised by a few steps. Star vaults on partially figurative consoles complete the interior. In the end of the choir, a tracery rosette with a figure of Stephen in the middle is inserted into the star figure of the ribs, which is similar to the rosette in the choir of the castle church in Meisenheim, but is executed much more simply. The burial chapel on the south aisle also closes on three sides with a star vault with the coat of arms of the Palatinate.
