The first wall was raised during the Iron Age. After the conquest of the Slavic territory of the Milzener by King Heinrich I, a state castle for the new district was founded in the curve of the Spree. Under Heinrich I the construction of a ring wall was started, the construction of which was completed under his son Otto I. In addition to the ring wall, Otto I also had the Ortenburg Castle built on the steep right bank of the Spree.
