The Nickelheimer Filze are part of an association of raised bogs that extend over an area of around 600 hectares. In 1989 the region was declared a landscape protection area and has been constantly renatured since then. The area is unique in Europe: on the entire continent, felts are considered to be the largest moor renaturation. Reason enough to be particularly careful.

The Sterntaler Filze is one of the Rosenheim trunk basin bogs and was created when the Rosenheimer See silted up after the Inn glacier retreated. In 2021 this area was included in the ranks of "Wetlands of International Importance". Unique flora and fauna grow in the moor landscape and the moor also serves as a habitat for many bird species. For example, black, brown, blue and robins live in the area, which is why it is also called "Vierkehlchenland".
