Reptile of the Year 2015 – The European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis)

The European pond turtle is an aquatic turtle and the only species of turtle in Germany. Due to its historical distribution and current occurrences, it belongs to the Germersheim district, and the “Marsh Turtle Without Borders” project is intended to permanently resettle it on the Upper Rhine.

The turtle shell, which is unique in the animal kingdom, not only protects the animals' chest, back and organs, but also serves like a "solar collector" to absorb solar heat in order to provide energy for their body functions. This is the only way it can achieve movement and metabolism. A warmed up pond turtle is very alert, shy and lightning fast. When the environment is cool, it slows down, but does not have to generate heat and does not freeze.

The pond turtle spends the months of November to March in hibernation. To do this, it hides itself, buried motionless, at the bottom of a body of water. She does not eat any food and reduces breathing and heart rate to a minimum.
