Hard to believe: the Roman aqueduct, which used to be a good 95 kilometers long, supplied Roman Cologne with 20 million liters of fresh water every day. Here you can still admire some relics of this masterful building.

The Roman Eifel aqueduct ran right through the town centre of Rheinbach. The pipeline turned into the town from Palmersheim/Flamersheim. Even today, Münstereifeler Strasse, Kriegerstrasse and the “Römerkanal” street show the former route roughly. The dimensions and design of the structure, which was almost completely removed in Rheinbach by medieval stone theft, are made visible in several sections erected in the town.

Apart from the section here in Pützstrasse, all the other sections erected in the town come from archaeological sites in Rheinbach itself and show a channel made of rammed concrete (opus caementicium). This was made in a formwork made of wooden boards. The section erected here comes from Mechernich-Breitenbenden (Station 16) and shows a different technique: its side walls were made using the “lost” formwork method – i.e. i.e., no wooden formwork was used to make the wall, but the inside of the cheeks was made of hand-cut ashlars and the space up to the excavation wall was built up with smaller rubble stones using plenty of mortar. A wooden falsework had to be used to build the vault, the negative imprint of which can be clearly seen on the inside of the vault.
The lime deposits inside the pipes were highly sought after in the Middle Ages, as they could be used to make beautiful pieces of work to decorate Romanesque churches. This material was used in half of Europe as "aqueduct marble". Source: roemerkanal.de/bauwerk
