The Bremengrund is part of the flood plain of the Rhine with alluvial forest, arms of the old Rhine and canyons. It is located south of Karlsruhe, between Neuburgweier and Au am Rhein, in the transition area from the furcation to the meander zone (see nature reserve “Altrhein-Kleiner Bodensee”). The nature reserve is bounded by the Rheinstrom, the Auer Altrhein and another loop of the Altrhein, the Judengasse. Due to the island location, diverse floodplain vegetation with species-rich fauna was able to develop undisturbed. The seclusion came to a sudden end in the sixties with the construction of a ford through the Auer Altrhein. This called the nature conservation administration on the scene, as it was known that a large and troublesome gray heron colony settled on the island. The first demands to put the Bremengrund under protection were made in 1968, but were not heard very much. Too many local and supraregional plans stood in the way of this project: the municipality of Au am Rhein wanted to exploit gravel in Bremengrund, the water and shipping directorate intended to build a barrage, and the motorway office planned a crossbar that should lead across the Rhine at Bremengrund . Twice - in 1973 and 1978 - the area was temporarily secured; Both times, however, the designation to the nature reserve failed. In the meantime, the resistance increased more and more: The state hunting association, the state fishing association and the Badischer Kanuverband raised massive concerns. Only a third procedure finally led to success in 1986 - the Bremengrund was finally declared a nature reserve.

The Bremer Grund is a nature reserve and can only be accessed via a bridge. Many grey and silver egrets sneezed there. Ducks, swans, geese, great crested grebes, coots and many songbirds are at home here. I have also seen kingfishers here. In spring, the birds are mostly on their own, as the bridge from the Old Rhine is usually flooded. Please stay on the paths, the animals will thank you. (Deer, hares, wild boars, foxes, etc.)
