The Van Cortlandt House Museum (also known as Frederick Van Cortlandt House or simply Van Cortlandt House) is the oldest building in the Bronx borough of New York City. It is located in the southwestern part of the approximately 450 hectare Van Cortlandt Park in the Riverdale district and is accessible via Broadway (U.S. Route 9). It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places (# 67000010) and National Historic Landmark. Wiki

The house was built by Frederick Van Cortlandt (1699-1749) for his family in 1748. Van Courtland died before completion and the estate passed to his son James Van Cortlandt (1727-1787).
The Van Courtlandt family of traders, prominent in New York City, established a grain plantation and mill on the property. During the Revolutionary War it was used by Rochambeau, Lafayette and George Washington, and served for a time as the headquarters of the Continental Army.[1] The Van Courtlandt family lived there for 140 years until the property was sold to the New York City Council in 1889 and converted into a public park. The Van Courtlandt House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places[2] on December 24, 1967 and as a National Historic Landmark on December 24, 1976.[3][4] The house has been a museum since 1897 (the oldest museum in New York City and the fourth oldest in the United States).[5] Wiki
