Santorini is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful islands in the world. The volcanic archipelago took on its form when it was overrun by a huge tidal wave around 1525 BC after an eruption. What remained was the caldera, the huge cone of black rock. The main town of Thira is located on the edge of a 300-meter-high wall that drops steeply to the sea. The houses were set on the rocks like jewels on a crown. It is hardly surprising that the Phoenicians called the island "Kalliste" - the most beautiful. Above, visitors can expect a white-and-blue tangle of houses and alleys with numerous staircases. Laden an Laden joins each other. Cafés, restaurants and bars invite you to linger with the unique crater view. If you want to escape the tourist crowds, walk along the crater path uphill to Firostefani and on to Imerovigli, the highest point on the crater rim.
