      "... Boppard was one of the most important Roman settlements on the Middle Rhine. Through Julius Caesar's campaigns of conquest in Germania, this region also came under the control of Rome. The Celts already lived here and gave the place the ancient name of BAUDOBRIGA At the beginning of the Mühltal, not far from the western outskirts, a strong fortress was built in the middle of the fourth century with the name BODOBRICA, from which the current name BOPPARD developed.

      Located directly on the banks of the Rhine, the late Roman fort is impressive because of its dimensions. At 308 x 154 meters, it formed a roughly 4.7 hectare rectangle. The walls were three meters thick on the landside and two and a half meters on the Rhine front. With a height of new meters, the complex underlined its defensive character, especially since 20 horseshoe-shaped towers at regular intervals of around 27 meters additionally protected the fort on the landside.

      After the times became too restless for the Roman occupiers and they finally left the Rhine, the settlement core of today's city developed from the former late antique fort. Today modern life pulsates in the alleys and in the squares of Boppard, but the roots are still visible. The remains of the Roman fortifications enclose today's town center and are the best preserved Roman fortress walls in Germany. ... "

          The Roman fort Boppard (Latin: Bodobrica) is a late Roman fort built in the 4th century and is located in the center of the town of Boppard on the Rhine.

          Roman settlements in this easily accessible location on the Middle Rhine between Taunus and Hunsrück have been documented since the 1st century AD. Historical sources from the 2nd-3rd cent. Century, as the Tabula Peutingeriana and the Itinerarium Provinciarium Antonini Augusti mention the settlement as Bouobriga or Bontobrice. The name probably goes back to an earlier Celtic settlement Boudobriga in the Rhine Valley.

            The fort was 308 m × 154 m in size, which corresponds to a walled area of around 4.6 hectares. The stone enclosing wall was three meters thick and was only measured at two meters on the Rhine front. In places, the wall is still preserved at a height of nine meters. On the outer wall there were probably a total of 28 round towers at regular intervals of around 27 meters. At least the southern fort wall was additionally secured by a ditch in front of it. There was an entrance on each of the narrow sides of the fort to the west and east, without there being any gate structures or towers. A narrow gate could be detected on the south side and such a gate is also suspected on the north side, but this could not be detected. The Rheintalstraße led south past the fort and a main road ran through the fort, which corresponds to today's Oberstraße. A special feature are the conspicuously massive towers, which reached a height of 10 meters and a diameter of 8.70 meters. They were used to station slingshots or darts for the milites balisarii stationed in Boppard.
