    The old saw on the Rasafeibach in Latschau is named after the field name "Mülli" (the Mülli is reminiscent of the flour mill that worked nearby until the 20th century) and its previous owner Ferdinand Loretz. The Loretz family bought the saw from the Gavanesch siblings, which had been in use since the 18th century. The current condition is essentially the same as in 1907. In the brick basement is the overshot wooden water wheel (4.1 m in diameter), which drives the transmission in the steering room. Via two eccentric flywheels and the stilts, this ensures the up and down movements of the Venetian gate, a simple vertical saw blade with automatic feed. We request that you use the public parking spaces at the Golmerbahn or at the Latschau power station.

          You hear it before you see it: a rhythmic pounding, like a pulse of wood and water. And then you stand before it, the old sawmill in Latschau – a place that looks as if someone had carved it out of time.

          It's not for nothing that the sawmill is called Mülli Ferdi, named after Ferdinand Loretz, the last miller with heart and hand. If you're lucky, you might even meet him: in denim overalls, with a practiced eye and hands that seem to read the wood like an open book.

          Inside, it smells of wet logs, machine oil, and history. The gears wheeze, the waterwheel turns in the brick shaft, the saw lifts and falls like a heavy eyelid. A dance of technology and muscle memory, from 1907. And yet fully present, in the present.

          Those who listen will learn about Veneer saws, swing wheels, hydropower – and what it means to remove a tree's backbone without robbing it of its dignity.
