Nobody knows where the volcano erupted, bringing the white and greenish-gray quartz keratophyr into the Steinach Gorge. Absolutely worth seeing. One of the most beautiful areas in the Franconian Forest. According to legend, Thor created the valley with his hammer. Huge rock walls, between which the clean lower Steinach winds as a small mountain river.

This special natural monument was created thousands of years ago. The Steinach River ate deeper and deeper through an extremely hard volcanic rock, which is called “quartz keratophyre”. The Steinachklamm geotope with its steep slopes and the narrow section of the gorge south of Wildenstein is definitely worth seeing.
