The heath landscape of the so-called "dune heath" is a cultural landscape, also a subsequent landscape. It was created by the very early clearing of the forests on Hiddensee and later grazing of the areas. In the course of this, the areas became deserted and sand was blown away, resulting in natural heathing. The NSG contains buildings that were illegal before 1989 and are now tolerated.
