The first chapel on the top of the pass was built in the 13th century. It was demolished and rebuilt in the 17th century. After the renovation in 2011, the chapel was re-blessed. The monk Meinrad is said to have lived as a hermit at the top of the pass in the ninth century. Meinrad later moved deeper into the Dark Forest, to what is now Einsiedeln.

The Etzel Chapel was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In 1698 it was demolished and rebuilt according to plans by Caspar Moosbrugger. The stucco work was created by Pietro Neuroni from Lugano and the frescoes by Francesco Antonio Giorgioli from Meride. In 1960 the chapel was restored and placed under the protection of the Swiss Confederation. The last renovation took place in 2010 and 2011.

St. Meinrad was the first cell of St. Meinrad, who later founded the Einsiedeln monastery. A visit to the small but magnificent chapel is a must for every pilgrim. The inn next door already existed in the 14th century and was of great importance as a pilgrim hospice.
A worthwhile break after the arduous climb from Lake Zurich - I enjoyed the best tomato cream soup of my life in the inn!
