The first documentary mention can be found for the Horneburg 1220 in the Great Vogteirolle of Count Friedrich von Isenberg-Altena. There is noted that belonged to Oberhof Richrode Horneburch. In an expiation agreement between the Cologne archbishop Friedrich III. of Saarwerden and Count Engelbert IV of the Mark of October 29, 1384 Horneburg was mentioned in the Vest Recklinghausen.
At the latest since the end of the 12th century, the Oer family was headed by the Reichshof Oer, to which the Horneburg belonged. The income of the court flowed to the Cologne cathedral chapter. In 1389 Heydenrich von Oyre (Heidenreich von Oer) was able to purchase the Reichshof Oer together with the Horneburg from the Cologne cathedral chapter. [4] He had the castle expanded and strongly fortified. His son Henry of Oer [5] tried to exercise sovereign rights over the surrounding villages. He was defeated in 1418 and had to leave the Horneburg.

In the document of 8 January 1332 was mentioned as a witness: Mr. Engilbertus, called Pastor of the Hornenburg (dictus de Hornenburg). This was a modesty phrase. Bernhard von Clairvaux wrote: Bernhardus, abbas dictus de Claravalle (Bernhard, abbot of Clairvaux). [30]
1610 received the church in Horneburg the right to donate baptism, under Heinrich Barckhoff (about 1610-1650), who later also dean and Vestischer commissioner. Under this able and energetic pastor, the church was rebuilt and expanded. [31] At school, founded by H. Barckhoff in 1610, he was a teacher for two years. He taught grammar, Latin and religion, but also gave an introduction to philosophy. He was deported in 1632 with the waiter by Hessian troops as a prisoner and imprisoned in 1635 in Dorsten for three weeks. In the same year he was appointed pastor.
