The hôtel de ville in Châlons is the town hall of the city of Châlons-en-Champagne. It is a classical building built between 1772 and 1776 by the architect Nicolas Durand. It replaced an older town hall from the 16th century that stood on the same site. The town hall is a protected historical monument for its facades, roofs, vestibule, staircase and large salon. It also has a dome, a bell tower and four lion statues on the forecourt that symbolize the power of the city. The famous writer Victor Hugo described the lions as “enormous stone dogs crouching formidably in front of the facade” during his journey along the Rhine with Juliette Drouet.
