A wonderful and well-marked circular hike to the summit of San Petrone. At 1767m, Monte San Petrone is the highest peak in the Castagniccia region. Castagniccia stands for the Corsican name 'chestnut grove' and covers the hilly area between Bastia and Aleria in the east of Corsica. The last ascent is again intense and well attended, I hardly met any people on my circular hike. But apparently there is still a not so intense way to the summit that comes from the north and brings some visitors with it.

The bridge over the Busso was the turning point of our bike ride around the reservoir into the Valle d'Alesani. Coming from Chiatra we drove clockwise on the narrow, small road (D17) to Novale and then crossed to Ortale. The return trip down we let the wheels roll happily on valley on the clear wide road. It is highly recommended to drive the route so, because the poor condition of the small road is to enjoy the hilltop rather than downhill.

The small village of Piedicroce is located in the Castagniccia region, in the empire of chestnut trees, near the east coast of Corsica. The way up there is sometimes very adventurous and is sometimes slowed down by pigs or cows on the road. But the place and the surrounding destinations are always worthwhile.

Ancient monastery ruin Couvent d'Orezza, not far from Piedicroce, on the east coast of Corsica. Partly you can not enter this, due to danger of collapse. Nevertheless, this is very nice and a short trip there is worthwhile.
