The Borna storage basin is a former opencast mine waste lake near Borna, south of Leipzig, which was converted into a flood retention basin between 1964 and 1980. The reservoir is normally only partially full, 46.10 million m³ is kept free as a flood protection area. The maximum depth when normally filled is 25 m, and during floods it is up to 38 m. During floods, water from the Pleiße can be channeled through the Regis-Serbitz flood retention basin into the reservoir. The storage basin was commissioned in 1977. The Borna-West opencast mine had been shut down seven years earlier.

This morning I walked the almost 16 km. Unfortunately, you can only rarely walk directly near the water. Unfortunately, apart from the asphalt band around the lake, there are no real hiking trails. It's ok for cycling and jogging, but not for hiking.
