On the 440 meter high Bannholz, protected from agriculture by a forest, there are over 100 easily recognizable barrows from the Hunsrück-Eifel culture (Iron Age, late Hallstatt period). While 2,500 years ago the burial mounds were located on the 440 meter high hill in open terrain and visible to everyone, today the entire area is overgrown with spruce monocultures. You can see the large and small burial mounds everywhere, although I liked the group of burial mounds in the western part the best, as in addition to the mounds, the surrounding ditches and ramparts can still be clearly seen, so-called grave gardens. The Idarkopfturm is always worth a detour.

So my daughter was a bit disappointed with the "cave". Even as a child, it was difficult to crawl a few meters into the tunnel. But a flashlight helps with the Schinderhannes Cave adventure. In front of the cave there is a small stream and picnic tables that invite you to linger.

This is where the "Mengerschieder Roggen" comes from for the "Heimat" bread from the Jung bakery, which is only offered seasonally. The sunny paths (“Römer”) on the Hundsrück (“d”) ridge are paved or gravel and popular with walkers.
