4,800 hectares of water area. A limitless habitat in which its own ecosystem has emerged. A lush flora, a diverse wildlife and a paradise for bird watchers. The reservoir was built in 1974 to regulate the flow of the Marne and the Seine to Paris and, with its water surface of 4,800 hectares, is still one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. When the facility was flooded, three villages were flooded: Chantecoq, Nuisement-aux-bois and Champaubert-aux-bois. The name “Der” comes from the Celtic word for “Chêne” (oak), a tree species that is heavily represented in the surrounding forests and which has long been used as raw material for the construction of half-timbered houses and churches.
