The town of Cluny was based on the Benedictine monastery (Cluniac Abbey), founded in 910. The abbey was the starting point and center of the Cluniac reform at the beginning of the 10th century. Cluny reached its peak membership at the beginning of the 12th century with approximately 400 monks. The last abbey church (Cluniac 3) was the world's largest Romanesque basilica and, until the construction of today's St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, the largest church in Christendom. The church had seven towers. Although large parts of the building were destroyed, the remaining relics are absolutely remarkable and make a visit to Cluny an unforgettable experience!

The residence of the Marquis d'Huxelles, built between 1606 and 1625, is home to the most sumptuous Louis XIII apartment preserved in France. Fireplaces, ceilings and wood panelling were painted, carved and gilded with sumptuous exuberance for the favourite of Queen Marie de Medici. Paintings, tapestries and period furniture complete this seductive evocation of "château life" at the time of the "Three Musketeers". The tour also reveals a monumental stone staircase (20 metres high), an 18th century kitchen and the opulent 1900s salons of an opera director. The garden, in the spirit of the Baroque period, offers 12 hectares of flowerbeds, a large boxwood labyrinth with aviary-belvedere, vegetable garden, green theatre, water features and remarkable trees.

The old village church of Taizé, small and simple. This is where Brother Roger founded the famous Taizé community. His idea of reconciliation quickly found great international resonance, so that the much larger Church of Reconciliation was built further up. Brother Roger has been buried here since his murder in 2005.

The patronage of this place of worship “Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption” refers to one of the many memorial or festival days in honor of Mary, Mother of God. This goes back to the festival of her physical assumption into heaven. The (Catholic) Church celebrates this festival annually on August 15th. In the Orthodox churches the feast is called the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. In rural areas of Germany with a predominantly Catholic population, it used to be customary for bundles of herbs to be collected by the population on this special day and blessed in a festive service. This old custom has occasionally survived to this day.

A beautiful, park-like garden with everything that goes with it: wilderness, flower borders, labyrinth, former volaire and fantastically trimmed yew trees. A place to relax 😍

This small and simple place of worship is the old village church of Taize. Here, in this tiny hamlet, the founder of the Taize community, Frere Roger, found the right place for his brotherhood, which settled here. His idea of reconciliation between peoples and between denominations became a – surprisingly strong – magnet that has drawn many mostly young people here for decades. Even though a much larger "Church of Reconciliation" was later built in the neighborhood for reasons of space, in which the members of the Taize community and their visitors gather to pray day after day, here in the simple village church, Frere Roger, the Reconciler, has his assassination (2005) found his final resting place.

Saint Martin, to whom this church is consecrated, is - next to Saint Nicholas - probably one of the most popular saints of all. The memorial day of the former officer in the Roman army is November 11th. On the night after the famous “coat sharing”, when he surrendered half his army cloak to a freezing beggar, Jesus Christ appears to him in a dream. He then converted to Christianity and was later - initially against his will - elected Bishop of Tours (France).

The Saint-Martin de Chapaize priory church is a church from the first half of the 11th century, located in the town of Chapaize in France. It is undoubtedly one of the main Romanesque churches in Tournugeois. Its originality lies above all in the 35-meter-high bell tower, decorated with Lombard bands over most of its height and in the top two floors of which twin bays have been created.

Baroque moated castle with magnificent Louis XIII interior once belonged to Raoul Gunsberg, director of the opera Monte-Carlo. There is a long list of prominent guests, including Mikhail Gorbachev and François Mitterand. In recent years, the magnificent gardens have been lovingly restored.

Tour of the castle absolutely recommended. Also the garden is very nice. Attention: between 12 and 14 o'clock you can only look at the garden, the castle is closed during this time.

The castle and the garden are really beautiful. In good weather you should take 2-3 hours to sit in peace in the different gardens. The gardens are well maintained. The maze is also fun. Especially to the children. In the castle you can look at some rooms. The lady at the entrance was very friendly and helpful. I recommend a visit.

Besides having a pretty palace with a well landscaped park worth a couple of hours to visit, the town is proud of the original owner's anti-slavery position at a time when colonial exploitation was still very much en vogue elsewhere. Surrounded by wide moats, the chateau, built from 1606 onwards, impresses by the monumentality of its military style facades. It contains an architectural feat, a hollow 21m high staircase, the oldest and largest in this technique. The apartments, painted, sculpted and gilded with splendor in 1627-28, offer the most complete and best preserved testimony to the decorative art of the time of Marie de Médicis, complete with furniture, paintings, tapestries and period objects. Over 10 hectares, the gardens, which have been restored since 1990, offer the different ambiences of a park dating back to the early 17th century: a vast flowerbed, a boxwood labyrinth with an aviary - belvedere, groves, a green theatre, a vegetable garden and water features. The guided tour of the seventeenth century apartments, the staircase, the C19th library and the kitchen lasts one hour. Walking through the gardens (parterres, maze, groves, outdoor theatre, Lamartine Walk, vegetable garden) requires 30-45 min. Visitors may remain in the park until 20:00. Entry 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:30, from mid-July to mid-August: continuous opening from 10:00 to 18:00, but check their website for opening hour updates https://chateaudecormatin.com/en

The former priory church of Saint-Martin is one of the most beautiful churches in Burgundy. It stands in the middle of the rural village of Chapaize, with only a few houses and farms, about 15 kilometers west of Tournus (on the Saône) and about 15 kilometers north of Cluny, in the hilly countryside of the Charollais and northern Mâconnais. The early Romanesque church is worth seeing for its age and simple beauty, but it is famous for its historical and artistic significance, which is particularly related to the nearby Abbey of Cluny. She is particularly impressed by her harmonious architecture, from which stands the surprisingly high bell tower, which has Lombard influences. Stonemasons from the northern Italian region around Milan were famous throughout Europe at the turn of the millennium. Source: Wikipedia
