From the Voie Bressane greenway, there is a beautiful view of the circular brick tower, located north of the village. It is the last remaining structure of the Château de Saint-Germain.

This may be a "tribute" to a history of boat building on the Ile Saint-Laurent (needs a bit more research!).

The cloister of the former monastery is also interesting in the area of the cathedral, although it is not accessible from the cathedral. Access is via Place du Cloitre. The cloister dates back to around 1000 AD. dated and is therefore older than the cathedral.

Chalon-sur-Saône is a town worth a detour: it is known for its Nicéphore Niepce museum, inventor of photography, but also for its “Chalon dans la rue” festival, which hosts street shows every year in July. Its old town, around Place Saint-Vincent and its cathedral, has many half-timbered houses where it is pleasant to stroll.

There aren't that many bridges over the Saône. This one is rather quiet, with Gergy taking a good break.

Originally in 1821, Chalon-sur-Saone was among the first cities in France to create a free school of drawing, keeping a collection of works of art within the building for art education. It is located on part of the former Ursuline Convent (1627). In 1866, Jules Chevrier, trader and councilor Chalonnais, gets the creation of a museum devoted to wealth of heritage. Passionate about arts and archeology, he became the first curator. The museum moved into the walls of the drawing school, which moved to Fructidor street and became the School Media Art (EMA | Fructidor). After some work of transformation of the building, the museum presents its collections as well Fine Arts, archeology as Natural Science with the encyclopedic ambition of the time. In 1895, in honor of the great man born in Chalon, he was baptized Vivant Denon museum. In 1957, various donations of collections and numerous archaeological discoveries led the city to enlarge the museum by adding the former girls' school, located on rue Boichot. In the 1970s, upon the arrival of curator and archaeologist Louis Bonnamour, underwater research operations, unpublished in Europe, were conducted in the Saone. These allow to considerably enrich the collections of the archeology section which provides a panorama of the human occupation of the Val de Saône, from prehistory to the present day. To date, the Denon Museum's collection is rich with more than 25,000 archaeological objects, 11,000 sculptures, graphic works, ethnographic objects, punctuating 100,000 years of history. 3 rue Boichot [entrance place of the Town Hall], 71100 Chalon-sur-Saône +33 [0] 3 85 94 74 41, musee.denon@chalonsursaone.fr Open every day except Tuesday and public holidays 9:30 am ... noon and 2 pm ... 5:30 pm Free entry http://www.museedenon.com

Chalon-sur-Saone is always worth a visit! Whether on foot or by bike, there is always something new to discover! In addition to the permanent collection, the Museum Nicéphore Niépce also regularly exhibits changing exhibitions, in which the most diverse photographers, historical and contemporary, are presented. When I am in Chalon, I always try to make a detour to this museum. Also very nice, the art museum Denon! I also like to walk along the "Quais" and admire the lovingly restored old barges rebuilt in houseboats, to chat with the proud owners, the history of their boats and their adventures on the French or even European waterways to be told. And those who are in the area in July should not miss the festival "CHALON DANS LA RUE"! Street music, street theater, photography exhibitions, (street) painting ... not only for watching, but also for participation, just a wonderful! From the 6th of July 2018 you can discover the program here: http://www.chalondanslarue.com/ A few little impressions of the last years here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CZCwx2nSkQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD7CTu76hfE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpYWqtwxJDY

Chalon sur Saône is a great stop along the EuroVelo 6 bike route: known as the birthplace of photography documented in the Nicéphore Niepce museum, who invented photography, in July more people come for the “Chalon dans la rue” festival, which hosts street shows every year; check here for updates: http://www.chalondanslarue.com The old town around the the cathedral preserves many half-timbered houses and is a great place for a break from biking. Chalon in the 19th century was best known for its most famous resident, the inventer Nicéphore Niépce. The museum on the Quai des Messageries shows some early photography relics, preserves more than two million photographs and many old artefacts such as cameras and other equipment for old and modern photography. Also on display are Niépce's 1807 Pyréolophore which is probably the world's first internal combustion engine, plus his 1818 implementation of a dandy horse, for which he coined the word vélocipède (a bicycle forerunner). According to Wikipedia the city site (ancient Cabillonum) was a capital of the Aedui and objects of La Tène culture have been retrieved from the bed of the river here, but the first mention of Cavillonum is found in Caesar's Gallic Wars. The Roman city already served as a river port and hub of road communications, of the Via Agrippa and side routes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalon-sur-Sa%C3%B4ne
