Within the "Ölberg" quarry, a species-rich dry grassland landscape has developed – a biodiversity hotspot. Rare plant species, adapted to the dry, nutrient-poor environment, thrive here, and numerous endangered animal species also feel at home in this unique habitat. In addition to the diverse flora and fauna, the area also offers fascinating rock formations to discover: The striking rhyolite formations in the quarry consist of volcanic rock and sometimes display an astonishingly regular pattern of hexagonal columns – a real eye-catcher.

Great place for a rest

This special rest area is located in the heart of the Frei-Laubersheim vineyards – a table with two chairs, perfect for a short break with a great view. 🍇 Whether you're bringing a bottle of wine or simply enjoying the peace and quiet – Rheinhessen feels very close here. A perfect place for a picnic, a photo, or simply to pause for a moment. 🌤️🍷

In Neu Bamberg, the castle ruins aren't the only thing worth visiting. For dining recommendations: The Junkersmühle and the Alte Ölmühle (the latter is located outside towards Wölstein and is only open on weekends). Those who enjoy a challenging climb on gravel roads can drive to the Winzeralm, not far from Neu Bamberg. The reward is a refreshing glass of wine. (Open whenever the flag is flying on the hilltop.)

The “Ölberg Wöllstein” nature reserve is approximately 3.8 hectares in size and was designated as such in 1983. The purpose of the protection is to preserve a species-rich dry grassland community as a location for rare plant species and plant communities and as a habitat for the typical and rare animal species associated with it, as well as to preserve the area for scientific reasons.
