The Selz River rises near Orbis on the northern edge of the Donnersberg district. It flows through the districts of Alzey-Worms and Mainz-Bingen, a historically densely populated, intensively farmed cultural landscape. After approximately 63 kilometers, the Selz empties into the Rhine near Ingelheim. Its 375-square-kilometer catchment area is characterized by a warm, dry climate with annual precipitation around 500 millimeters. Despite its low and often irregular flow, the Selz is considered a vital artery for the arid Rhine-Hessian hill country. The Selz Association carried out renaturalization projects along the Selz as early as the beginning of the 1990s, which garnered significant attention beyond the region.

The Selz is a 61 km long, southern and left tributary of the Rhine and one of the main waterways in Rhenish Hesse.[5] It flows in the Rhenish Hesse table and hill country in Rhineland-Palatinate through the Palatinate Donnersberg district and the Rhenish Hesse districts of Alzey-Worms and Mainz-Bingen.
