Mofettes at Lake Laach demonstrate: The Laacher See volcano, Europe's youngest, didn't go extinct 13,000 years ago; it's just dormant. That's what volcanologists say. The venerable Benedictine abbey of MARIA LAACH, very picturesquely situated on the banks of Lake Laach, is without a doubt one of the great highlights of this region. In addition to the extremely impressive Romanesque monastery church, where the monks meet several times a day for communal prayer (visitors are welcome to join in the prayers), there are restaurants, a book and art shop, a garden center and other businesses. Many visitors combine a tour of the abbey with a walk around the lake.

The Laacher See in the eastern volcanic Eifel, near the Maria Laach Abbey in the municipality of Glees, is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate. It was formed in the caldera of the Laach volcano after its last eruption, which was initially dated to 10,930 BC.
