Die Alten Allern sind teil stehende, teils langsam fließende Gewässer mit viel Bewuchs am Rand und im Wasser. Die Grundbeschaffenheit ist sandig-morastig mit leicht trübem Wasser. Die Alten Allern wird von Wanderern, Naturfreunden und Anglern genutzt. Hauptfischarten sind heute Aal, Hecht, Barsch, Karpfen, Schleie, Weißfische und Edelkrebse. In der Zeit von Mai bis Oktober ist auf der Alten Aller das Paddeln, unter Beachtung der Naturverträglichkeit, eingeschränkt zugelassen. Via Pfarrstraße, you reach St. Laurentius Church, which was probably built on a former pagan place of worship. First documented in 1257, this building is the oldest in the city. The church served as a place of refuge in times of war and fire. Originally built as a Romanesque fieldstone building (split boulders can be found on the tower and south wall), new windows were added in the late Gothic period (14th century). An extension to the east and the addition of two chapels to the north and south also date back to the Gothic period. The existing flat ceiling was replaced by a ribbed vault. The Mandelsloh and Clüver Chapels contain old gravestones as well as two marble sarcophagi belonging to an old Achim noble family. The clock in the church tower, first mentioned in writing in 1574, is now electronically controlled.
