Wittekindsburg is one of the most important historical sites in the Wiehen Hills and is situated high atop Wittekindsberg near Porta Westfalica. From here, there is a sweeping view over the Weser Gorge and the surrounding countryside – a strategically advantageous location that was used by people from early times. Wittekindsburg is an early medieval fortification, though its origins reach back to prehistoric and early historic times. The site owes its name to the Saxon Duke Widukind (Wittekind), who became known in the 8th century as an adversary of Charlemagne. Whether Widukind himself ever resided here is not historically certain, but the legends surrounding him are closely linked to this place. The impressive remains of the ramparts and ditches, still visible in the landscape today, testify to the fortification's former importance as a place of protection and refuge. Today, Wittekindsburg is a popular destination for hikers, history buffs, and nature lovers. The site is situated amidst ancient beech forests and is accessible via well-maintained paths. Information panels on site provide insights into the history and archaeological findings surrounding the castle complex. Other important sites, such as the Margarethenklus and the Kreuzkirche (Church of the Cross), are located nearby, further emphasizing the historical character of Wittekindsberg.

The Rote Brink takes its name from an intensely reddish-brown coloured layer of sandy marl in the otherwise predominant limestone.

The Nammer Castle or "Nammer Lager" is located 3 km east of the Porta Westfalica on the northern slope of the Roter Brink in the Weser Mountains. It is therefore located at the transition from the North German Plain to the Weserbergland. The complex is unusually large compared to other fortifications of the same time. Together with its location above the "Alter Mindener Heerweg", which was the most important traffic route between the areas north and south of the castle until the 19th century, this could speak for its former importance. The Nammer Castle was first recognized in 1897, before it was archaeologically examined several times in the years 1903-1905 and 1935-1943. Further excavations were finally carried out in the 1980s. Based on the construction method and the finds, the fortifications can be dated to the 3rd to 1st century BC. An expansion phase can be determined based on radiocarbon dating between 155 BC and 220 AD. Source: https://www.altertumskommission.lwl.org/de/forschung/burgen/die-nammer-burg-bei-porta-westfalica/
