860 meters in altitude in seven minutes: The Åre cable car (Kabinbanan) makes Åreskutan the most easily accessible high mountain in Sweden. The mountain station is at an altitude of 1274 meters, the valley station is located just above the central square Åre torg at 421 meters above sea level. From the mountain station and from the nearby summit at an altitude of 1,420 meters you have a view that stretches for kilometers over the mountains of Jämtland. The cable car was built as part of the Åre project, where the Swedish government decided in 1972 to allocate money to create a ski area in Årefjällen where “normal” people could also afford to ski. The Kabinbana was opened in 1976. Each cabin can accommodate 75 people. The train usually runs every 20 minutes. Dogs are welcome in one of the mountain huts, but four-legged friends must generally be kept on a leash on the mountain.

The Ristafallet waterfall on Åreälven is not far from the European route E 14. A forested island divides the fall - which is almost completely frozen in winter - into a northern and a southern section. The entire fall is fifty meters wide, fourteen meters high. Depending on the season, the flow is 100 to 400 cubic meters of water per second. The moist environment of the waterfall has created a special nature with special lichens, grasses and animals, which has been given protection status by the Swedish state.

At the Ristafallet campsite in Järpen you can stay right next to the magnificent Ristafall. There are small cabins and slightly more luxurious apartments, caravan and motorhome pitches and also space for people who just want to camp here with a tent. The campsite has thirty pitches, most with electricity. It is open all year round and is only closed from October 15th to December 25th. There are several hiking trails that start or pass here. For example, the St. Olavs Trail, which runs through the camping area, is a very nice, easy trail for multi-day hikes because there are plenty of overnight accommodations along the route.

At the “Näckens udde”, the “tip of the neck”, you can view the mighty waterfall from below. At the end of May/beginning of June, when the Tännforsen has the most water, an amount of liquid shoots over the edge that would fill the huge Globen Arena in Stockholm within a quarter of an hour.

Tännforsen is the most powerful waterfall in Sweden. It is located 22 kilometers northwest of Åre on the upper reaches of the Åreälven. Here the river forms several lakes. Lake Tännsjön flows over Tännfors into Lake Östra Noren, 37 meters lower. The waterfall was formed on the steep edge of an overhanging rocky plateau formed by the folding of the Scandinavian mountain range approximately 500 million years ago. A special climate develops near a large waterfall like Tännforsen. The mist caused by the waterfall supports interesting and unusual lichen species on the slates and trees.
