In order to better control the Öresund, the Danish King Christian III had the Landskrona fortress built in 1549 directly on the coast, west of the city center. The inner fortress core of the Landskrona Citadel was completed in 1559 and has a square floor plan with external dimensions of around 90x90 meters with a mighty round tower at each corner, surrounded by a 30-meter-wide moat. The outdoor facilities and the castle courtyard of the fortress are freely accessible at any time during the day. There is a cozy café near the western bastion and you can even go fishing in the inner fortress moat. On the old ramparts in the northeast of the citadel is the oldest allotment colony in Sweden and Rothoffs Museikoloni, the only allotment museum in the country. During the summer months, guided tours of the walls of the fortress are offered several times a day. Regularly changing exhibitions are held in the outbuildings and the halls in the main building are used for various events.
