9月 11, 2025, Historic Village of Monsaraz
With the construction of the Alqueva Dam, and because Monsaraz is not only a monumental town, but also a high point from which to enjoy spectacular views of the waters of the great lake, the number of tourists in this area has increased exponentially in recent years.

In a region dotted with megalithic monuments, it is believed that the earliest human occupation of this site dates back to a prehistoric hillfort, successively occupied by Romans, Visigoths, and Muslims, who derived their subsistence from activities related to the agro-pastoral economy. The place name is linked to the latter domain, since, in Portuguese, the word xarez (or xerez) derives from the Arabic saris (or sharish), designating the rockrose (xaras) vegetation then abundant along the banks of the Guadiana River. The place name Monsaraz thus evolved from Monte Xarez (or Xaraz).

Located on the left bank of the Guadiana River, it stands in a dominant position above the old medieval town. From its walls, you can see the surrounding plain with Monsaraz Castle to the north and the border with Spain to the east. It is classified as a Property of Public Interest by public decree. Today, it's a museum village perfectly geared toward tourists. It won the "Monument Villages" category in the 7 Maravilhas de Portugal competition in 2017. Anyone staying in the Alentejo should definitely plan a visit here. It's best to arrive early in the morning, as it gets crowded and noisy from 11 a.m. onwards – that's when the tourist buses arrive.

Mourão Castle is well-preserved and can be visited free of charge. You can climb the castle walls via an adventurous climb (they're dilapidated and completely unsecured). Pacmen64 🇵🇹 isn't right here, although I otherwise greatly appreciate his contributions.

Like most Portuguese castles, this one is free to visit. The walls are accessible, offering a great view of the town and the surrounding area. Unfortunately, we weren't able to climb the keep. The old bullring is impressive.

It's best to visit early in the morning. Around 11 a.m., numerous tourist buses arrive, and the peace and quiet disappears. We arrived around 9 a.m. and had the place to ourselves for almost two hours.

What's particularly interesting about the Xerez stone group is its square shape. The menhir is located in the center, surrounded by smaller stones. A concrete path leads from the Orada Monastery to it—is this really necessary? A regular path would certainly have sufficed. The entire area appears very neglected.

The Xerez Cromlech stands on open land, close to the Convent of Orada, and with a view of the walls of Monsaraz. It is the second "home" to prevent it from being submerged by the Alqueva dam. The 55 granite menhirs of the Xerez Cromlech have already been to other places because they were moved here, to the vicinity of the village of Telheiro, in 2004, to prevent submersion by the Alqueva dam. The cromlech was in front of Monte Xerez, close to a dolmen, about 5km from Monsaraz.

4月 1, 2025, Passadiços da Serra d'Ossa
The Serra d’Ossa Walkways run along the verdant valley of the Ribeira do Monte Virgem, along steep schist cliffs, between the village of Aldeia da Serra and the imposing Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte da Virgem, preceded by a long (and steep) staircase with approximately 300 steps. Although the Serra d’Ossa Walkways only opened in April 2021, they are already one of the must-see places in the Alentejo for all nature lovers. After all, walking along them allows you to discover a very different side of this region in the south of Portugal, more associated with vast plains than with steep cliffs. The Serra d’Ossa Walking Trail is only 1.5 km long (3 km round trip), which makes it a great walk to do with children. Not only because it is relatively short, but above all because it does not have significant differences in height, with the exception of the section of the staircase that precedes the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte da Virgem. The castle is free to enter and has parking just outside the main gate. It's a bit out of the way but you can see it on the hilltop for quite a distance and it is in very pretty countryside. The outer walls are intact and that's pretty much all there is. There are almost no buildings inside and you can't climb on the walls. There is no information other than a plaque by the church built into the walls. Good views though as you walk around.

The castle is made up of a medieval wall, built in a curious combination of schist, marble and granite stones, reinforced by six quadrangular towers. The gates are flanked by turrets, some with pointed arches in the Gothic style. Among the towers, the Gothic-style keep stands out, with a door opening onto the parade ground. Inside the enclosure, there are the remains of the Guard House and the old Town Hall. The 17th century renovations included bastions at the four corners of the wall and ravelins in front of the curtain walls.

Monsaraz is a medieval village surrounded by a wall, guarded by an imposing castle, located at its highest point. It is one of the oldest settlements in Portugal, and a must-see on a tour of the Alentejo. The village of Monsaraz is a parish in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, in the Alentejo region of Portugal. The village has around 800 inhabitants and looks like a place that has stopped in time, without changing its style for centuries.

Monsaraz, the graceful medieval village of Monsaraz, maintains the magic from ancient times like few others in the world. Made of lime and schist, this place whispers us, between the echo of our footsteps in its streets. A lot of magnificent stories could be told about its courageous kings, Knights Templar, brave people and dames of simple beauty.

Monsaraz is a small town and the best way to get to know it is on foot, wandering its streets and alleys. It's a real pleasure to stroll through the narrow streets paved with shale, to walk along the narrow streets, to turn corners to discover yet another quaint little house, a door you want to go through, a window from which you want to gaze into the distance. Castelo de Monsaraz is a castle in Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portugal. It is classified as a National Monument. The construction works began after the Christian reconquest and extended for several reigns. Looking to increase the population and its defense, King D.
