Very special place on an active waste mountain. It's a beautiful ride to the top of the mount, but you have to endure the smell.

This is an oddity in this landscape of pine forests and bogs. The Gasselterveld used to be an mine, hence the "oddity" of light blue waters in a place where every other pond, lake, puddle is pitch black! The Gasselterveld has been open to the public since 2017.

The Gasselterveld is an old sand excavation, in the middle it is 50 meters deep, making the water wonderfully cool. Be careful; it gets very deep very quickly.

On the edge of the Gieten-Borger forestry, in the middle of the Drentse Hondsrug, you will find swimming pond 't Nije Hemelriek and swimming lake Gasselterveld. With incredibly blue water, a view of the forests and a dazzling white beach. A wonderful place where you can swim and sunbathe to your heart's content. Swimming pond 't Nije Hemelriek is very shallow and suitable for children. Swimming lake Gasselterveld is a former sand quarry, which is 50 metres deep in the middle. Due to the cold deep water and banks of loose sand, only the part on the north-east side of the lake is suitable for swimmers. The VAM mountain near Wijster will be closed from mid-July 2023 until the end of August. During the summer, a new cycling course will be constructed on the popular 'Col du VAM' among cyclists. The existing course will also be modified. This is happening in anticipation of the European Cycling Championship, which will be held on the 'Roof of Drenthe' in September.
