Visited the VAMberg or col du Vam from Deventer. Nice for once. With a lot of imagination in terms of view, it reminds a little of an Alpine climb. Furthermore, it is two steep parts and a cobblestone strip on a garbage dump.

The VAM berg (or Col du VAM as they call it nowadays) is part of a bigger garbage dump, turned into a recreational hill. With it's 48 meters it's quite the mountain (in The Netherlands that is) and the multiple roads leading up and down (including a mountainbike trail) make for a nice training ground or just chance of scenery for those tired of the flats of Drenthe.
Pro: the Ronde van Drenthe bicycle race hits this 'mountain' every year.
Con: It's still a garbage dump site in the middle of nowhere.

Never climbed a 'real' mountain by bike? The VAM-berg may not be a top-class pass, but you can certainly test your climbing and descending talents here.

There's also a challenging 150-meter cobblestone section with a 15% incline at the end of the northernmost climb, featuring smaller, irregular 'Drenth cobblestones'.

No, there are generally no permits or fees required to cycle on the Col du VAM. It is a publicly accessible recreational area. However, specific events or races might have their own entry requirements, so it's always good to check if you plan to visit during a scheduled event.

What are the best times of year to visit the Col du VAM to avoid crowds or for specific weather conditions?

While the Col du VAM is a year-round destination, the best time for optimal cycling enjoyment is during milder weather, typically from late spring to early autumn (April to October). During these months, the weather is generally more pleasant, and the days are longer. Weekends, especially during good weather, can be quite crowded, so visiting on a weekday morning might offer a more serene experience. Winter cycling is possible but be prepared for colder temperatures, potential ice, and stronger winds.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the different Col du VAM climbing trails?

The terrain on the Col du VAM varies. The Ronde van Drenthepad is known for its older asphalt and immediate steepness. Other routes, like the 'Dak van Drenthe', feature newer asphalt. There's also a dedicated mountain bike course with varied natural terrain, including dirt paths, climbs, and descents.

Are there any family-friendly activities or routes at the Col du VAM for non-cyclists or younger children?

Yes, beyond the challenging cycling routes, the VAM-berg area offers options for families.
