What inevitably catches the eye of passing cyclists are the modern-day successors to the beautiful historic windmills. Centuries ago, our ancestors were already clever enough to harness the power of the wind for their own purposes, using it to drive millstones and grind grain into flour, for example. Often placed in the landscape by the dozen, this modern and rather unsightly version – in the past, every single mill was carefully considered in its architecture – serves to generate electricity. These wind farms are controversial, as their construction disregards the landscape, and, more importantly, the slender sails become death traps for birds.
