The Harlingen lighthouse is more than a century old and was completely renovated in the late 1990s. Since 1999, you can even spend the night there.

The port of Harlingen is located directly on the Wadden Sea. There's so much to discover here: watch ships, admire the whale fountain, relax on one of the benches, and much more.

A unique combination of two functions on one ship, both rarely seen today: the lightship, which safely stationed sailors and their ships in English coastal waters from 1949 to 1991, and the broadcasting ship, which delighted listeners with radio programs. Today, the ship can be visited or rented for events.

Harlingen was once a center of whaling. Today, we no longer seek to kill these great and magnificent animals, but rather to save them from death. Especially since, for unknown reasons, they are now increasingly stranded in shallow waters. The Harlingen fountain is a life-size sperm whale. It lies lost in the Zuiderpier, but every now and then its powerful jet of water reveals that it is very much alive. Thus, "The Whale" reminds us of the profound influence that humans have on all that lives in the sea. You can reach the fountain by strolling along the wall on the left side of the harbor. De Stenen Man is a sculpture erected in Harlingen in 1576. This state-protected monument, with the Frisian name "De Stiennen man," stands on the Westerzeedijk, where Harlingen's beach is today. In 1576, the area was hit by severe flooding, which was given the name "All Saints' Flood."
