With the reclamation of the peat colonies around 1600, the village of Oude Pekela was founded. Shortly thereafter, between 1683 and 1685, a simple hall church was built, financed by the city of Groningen, which also became the church's owner.

The bridge is almost 800 meters long and 3.5 meters wide and consists of four interconnected bridges.

Blauwestad (German: Blaustadt) is a new residential area in the Dutch region of East Groningen, roughly between the towns of Winschoten, Midwolda, Oostwold, Finsterwolde, and Scheemda.
