The Ringvaart canal in Amsterdam-East is the name of the northern and eastern sections of the ring canal around the Watergraafsmeer polder, which was drained in 1629. The Ringvaart also forms the boundary of the Watergraafsmeer district (an independent municipality until 1921 and a district of Amsterdam from 1987 to 1998). Founded by Dr Samuel Sarphati, a leading physician in the 19th Century, the hotel was created as an architectural monument. The Wereldmuseum Amsterdam (known as Tropenmuseum between 1950 and 2023), founded in 1864 as the Koloniaal Museum, is a Dutch ethnographic museum on the Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam. It has a large collection of ethnographic artefacts from tropical and subtropical areas, especially from the former Dutch overseas territories. Until 2014 it was part of the Royal Tropical Institute, today the museum is part of the National Museum of World Cultures.
