The parish Hambergen is named "St. Cosmae & Damiani ", which of course stems from our church. She or her predecessor was dedicated to these two saints. But what does that mean? Cosmas and Damian were, according to legend, twin brothers who allegedly treated the sick without payment. Allegedly, at the end of the third century, they lived in Cilicia, today's Turkey. They were Christians who fell victim to the persecution under the Roman Emperor Diocletian. They would not have made it to the rank of saints unless a particular story came to their deaths. How is it, then, that in 1335 a church in the north of Germany is dedicated to two men who were said to have operated more than 3000km over a thousand years ago? Just a year before, in 1334, Burchard, the bishop of Bremen, discovered bones embedded in the cathedral. These are supposed to have been the legs of Cosmas and Damian brought by Archbishop Adalag 965 from Rome. Since the Hamberger wanted to build their first own church in 1335 and had to give his permission to Bishop Borchard, it was certainly fast on the two saints Cosmas and Damian. Probably in the altar of the Hamberger church at that time a bone fragment of this Bremen find was walled in.
