The Muurhuizen (Wall Houses) were built on the foundations of Amersfoort's first city wall. When a new city wall was constructed around 1380 to accommodate the city's growth, the old wall was demolished. The freed-up stones were used to build houses along the old wall, starting around 1500 – hence the name Muurhuizen (Wall Houses).

The building is constructed on a rectangular plan under a red-tiled saddleback roof. Both side walls are crowned by a stepped gable. The arched base of the water gate on the side wall was added or expanded during a restoration in the 1940s.
