The Nieuwe Bierkaai brings water back into the city, as it used to be. The Oude Haven was given a contemporary touch with a beautiful bridge and many terraces. Halfway through 2012, this renewed part of the city was inaugurated and is now a location where many small-scale events take place. The name 'Bierkaai' dates back to the 16th century and the left side of the harbour still bears the name 'Bierkaaistraat'. There was a bridge between the two sides of the harbour and it has now been rebuilt. The heart of the commercial activities in Hulst was in this part of the city, but keeping it navigable was an expensive business. The harbour silted up time and again. Around 1600, the high fortress was built, the Bollewerckpoort disappeared under the ground and the harbour was filled in.

The fish "Brekso" is a work by the Rotterdam artist Albert Kramer, whose maxi play objects can be found in several places in the Netherlands, including Rotterdam, Lelystad and Culemborg. In Breskens, the artist has left other creative traces in addition to the fish, at the harbor and on the Spuiplein: a crab, a fish head, a fish tail, a fishy trio and the sardine can bring life to the harbor town as colorful art.
