The site's religious history dates back to the Danish period, with an original St. Hilda's Chapel potentially existing as early as 500 AD. Medieval building: By the 12th century, the chapel was in ruins. A new Norman church, dedicated to All Saints, was constructed around 1213. Elements from the earlier structure were incorporated into the new building. Much of the present church has a dominant Perpendicular style from the 14th and 15th centuries. The distinctive, tall bell tower, which serves as a local landmark, was added in the 15th century.

This 10 km (6.4 miles) traffic-free flat route follows the old East Coast mainline railway and features a scale model of the Solar System.

Neptune

Grade I listed building. The surviving fifteenth-century structures formed part of a fortified medieval palace belonging to the Archbishops of York, which was dismantled in the aftermath of the English Civil War. The only remaining parts of the castle are the gatehouse and the banqueting hall. Stones from the destroyed castle were used in the construction of surrounding houses. The foundations of some other structures do remain as well as the castle's cellar, which was excavated in the 19th century. The gatehouse served as a courthouse until the 1930s, before being used as an officers' mess and a building for the Home Guard during World War II. The first fortifications on this site are believed to be those built by King Athelstan in the 10th Century.

Grade II listed swing bridge opened in 1872. The deck was submerged when the River Ouse flooded in 2015.

The oldest part of the church is the west wall, dating from the mid- or late-12th century. The chancel and south aisle were added in the 13th century. The church was first recorded in 1294, but is believed to have previously been a chapel of Cawood Castle. In the churchyard is a stone with a cup-like hollow, believed to have been used for depositing donations for lepers.

Covering approximately five miles in length, it is not strenuous and therefore is idea for family groups. The approximate time for this walk is 2 – 2.5hrs. Several notable landmarks are encompassed on the route.

Often sited in country parks, estates, hilltops or village greens, brazier beacons become a lasting memorial and are used to mark many occasions or events. This one is on top of a flood defence embankment.

The sidings used to be quite extensive - see https://www.escrickheritage.org/escrick-railway-station-and-sidings/ for old black and white photos. Escrick Station was opened on 2 January 1871 by the North Eastern Railway. It closed to passengers on 8 June 1953 and closed to goods traffic in 1961. The line was closed in October 1983, with all trains diverted onto the new section of the East Coast Main Line between Temple Hirst Junction and Colton Junction (Selby Diversion).

Close to the off-road parking on the B1222, information board, sculpture made from and old drill-bit and a bench to rest at.

Not much here either except the marker and signpost. 1.5 miles towards York to reach Uranus, 1.75 miles towards Riccall to reach Pluto.

Not much here but the marker and the signpost to its neighbours - 1.5 miles to Saturn and around 1.75 miles to Neptune.

Along with the Jupiter marker, there is a bench, couple of other sculptures and an information board describing those parts of the National Cycle Network that are around York.

The sculptures for the four rocky planets are all very close to each other and lie within a 300m stretch of the track.

Location is slightly out - the highlight is just over the bridge on the north side of York Road, however, just here you can also see a one third scale model replica of the Cassini-Huygens Space Probe, and a few metres south there is a little self-serve cafe kiosk with honesty box. Don't count on this though, it was empty and looked like it had been neglected for quite some time when I passed it.

Not quite Sputnik, but a model replica of the Voyager 1 Space Probe, complete with information board.
