Beautiful Bungay. peaceful and tranquil

The more scenic alternative to the modern road bridge on the adjacent B1062. A popular swim and picnic spot in the summer.

The village of Earsham nestles within a meander of the River Waveney, to the west of the market town of Bungay. Its historic Queen's Head pub operated as a coaching inn in the mid-19th century and is still going today, with a range of real ales, ciders and craft beers. The Angles Way long-distance trail passes through the village.

With its fine 14th-century tower and impressive spire, All Saints Church is a pretty sight on the edge of Earsham. Two named trails pass the church: Bigod's Way, a 5.5-mile (9 km) loop from Bungay; and the Angles Way, a long-distance trail that follows the River Waveney from the sea at Great Yarmouth to its source, before tracing the Little Ouse to Thetford.

Bridge Street is a pretty and colourful little street that leads from the heart of Bungay to the River Waveney. The characterful Chequers Inn is one of the oldest buildings in the town and dates from the 17th century. The pub serves good local ale and has a beer garden.

The Grade I-listed Norman Bungay Castle became the seat of the Bigod family, allies of King William during the conquest of 1066. The Bigods were charismatic leaders among the barons and oversaw the construction of the keep in the latter half of the 12th century. Today, Bungay Castle is an impressive ruin, with its two huge gate towers still intact. However, throughout 2023, the castle was closed for restorations.

Bungay Castle is a Grade I listed building. The site was originally a Norman castle built in about 1100 to take advantage of the natural protection provided by a curve in the River Waveney. The remains today of the castle include its keep, gatehouse, curtain wall and the remnants of the castle’s inner bailey wall. Open daily between 10am and 4pm, the castle can be visited via the visitor centre on the road known as Castle Orchard.

Bungay has some great shops the Earsham St Deli, The Frontroom , The Little Green Wholefoods and Ma Belle Bakery are well worth a visit and all bring something different for your food based needs

I was there today and was attacked by horseflies which started biting my legs as soon as I arrived, so I beat a hasty retreat. The river by the bridge at Homersfield is easier access.

A great place to canoe from if heading into Bungay and the variousMills and maltings. Heading out towards Earsham its a little shallow so I'd recommend plastic boats only.

Don't forget your wellies in the wetter months especially if the dairy herd from Fen Farm have been in the meadows. It can get a little squidgy

The lake here is private and used by the local waterski club. However, from the roadside, you can admire the flooded gravel pits and get a close-up view of the quarry conveyor belt. This conveyor runs under Bath Hills Road and Hall Road to the sand and gravel workings to the south. Thanks to its proximity to the road, you'll get an unusual opportunity to see this bit of logistical genius. Not to be mistaken for the bottom of a toboggan run.

With the two bridges crossing the River Waveney now rebuilt, the Angles Way once again crosses here and heads into Stow Fen. This low-lying area of access land typifies the flat, water meadows of the Waveney and if you keep your eyes on the sky, you might spot birds of prey hovering above.

Before Flixton quarry was put into use, an archeological survey discovered numerous evidence of Neolithic activity in the immediate area, including pits, ditches and ceramic artefacts. A mammoth tusk was also found here during excavations. Today, a large area of the pits is a thriving habitat for birds and wildlife. You’ll find an information board just above the quarry and keep an eye out for the birds that call this open water area home.

The oldest concrete bridge in Great Britain, Homersfield bridge has one foot in Suffolk and one in Norfolk as it crosses the River Waveney. A grade II listed structure, this charming span is a lovely place to pause and admire the river and it chuckles along its wandering path. Built in 1869, it’s made of concrete and has a wrought iron frame within. It was restored in the 90s and now hosts only foot and bike traffic.

A short but beautiful section of the Angles Way leading from Homersfield village to Mendham. Read the signs and take heed as there on occasion bulls in the fields.
