Knaresborough Viaduct is a viaduct in the North Yorkshire town of Knaresborough, England. The viaduct carries the Harrogate line over the River Nidd in the town. The viaduct was supposed to have opened in 1848, but the first construction collapsed into the river very near to completion, which necessitated a new viaduct and delayed the opening of the line through Knaresborough by three years.

Spofforth held paramount significance as the primary residence of the Percy family, a pivotal and commanding lineage in the northern realms of England, until the concluding era of the 14th century. William de Percy, a cherished figure in the eyes of William the Conqueror, erected a distinguished manor house upon this land during the 11th century. It is said that within these very grounds, insurgent barons convened to draft the historic Magna Carta in the year 1215.

Nidd Gorge is a ravine of about 3 miles in length between Nidd viaduct and Grimbald bridge. The Knaresborough section along which the NCN 636 runs offers a spectacular viewpoint of the town and bridges.

Knaresborough Viaduct crosses the River Nidd allowing the Harrogate train line to reach Knaresborough. A viaduct was built here in 1848 but as it was almost finished, it dramatically collapsed. So much stone and lime went into the river that thousands of fish died from poisoning. This viaduct was opened in 1854 using some of the stone recovered from its collapsed predecessor. It is a grade II listed structure.

Spofforth Castle was a fortified Manor House, supposedly where the Magna Carta was written in 1215. The castle was bought by the people of Spofforth in 1985 to ensure that it could continue to be enjoyed by the local community. This means it is free to visit for everyone. Well known and popular brewery in Tadcaster. You can take a tour or just marvel at the building from the outside.

There is a small free car park at Tadcaster just over the bridge by the bus station. If you go there early it’s a good starting place/end place for a variety of rides.

Really flat, smooth route between Wetherby and Spofforth along the old railway track. Mostly part of National Cycle Route 67.

Beautiful little town. A few little cafes and ice cream huts.

Stop to admire a view that Anne Bronte sketched. Check out the info board with loads of great history and facts about local wildlife.

Steep climb up if you go down to the river below the viaduct. Which is a must.

Nice picnic stop - only a short ride into the town with a good selection of shops

The castle is quite impressive for it's size and free to enter. Just pop round the back and through the gates. A good spot for some refuelling.

Great little cafe on the edge of the town centre. Good quality food and great coffee...and chips in a mug!
