The hiking trail is always worth a trip. I'm here at least once a year and it's always beautiful.

The official name for this unity memorial is: "Three trees for Germany's unity - a memorial for reunification". The idea came from SDW member Werner Erhardt (SDW = German Forest Protection Association). A unity memorial was to be planted from three trees that would grow together over time. The idea was presented to the then Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel as part of the citizens' dialogue. It was included in the list of the best suggestions and implemented together with the SDW. Chancellor Angela Merkel has taken over the patronage. Since then, the German Forest Protection Association has supported the planting of growing memorial sites made of three trees as a reminder of this important peaceful event. Over 305 cities and municipalities have already taken part. The idea lives on and more and more municipalities are taking part. The idea: Every German municipality plants three trees in the shape of an equilateral triangle, each with a side length of ten meters. A beech symbolizes the west and a pine for the eastern federal states. The oak stands for the reunified Germany. The growth of these trees and their crowns document the growth, prosperity, change and the coming together of the formerly divided country.
