Nendrum Monastery was a Christian monastery founded in the 5th century. The monastery finished somewhere between 974 and 1178, but the church survived until the 15th century. You can visit the ruins if you're riding past.

Sketrick Castkle is a historic landmark situated on Sketrick Island near Whiterock. The castle dates back to the 12th century and the grounds are free to explore.

Reagh Island is part of an archipelago in Strangford Lough, a vast natural harbor south-east of Belfast. In the past, the island could only be reached at low tide via a small ford. Today it is connected to the mainland and its neighboring island, Mahee Island, by two causeways. Here I found a place where I actually only wanted to take a short break and which then captivated me so much that I almost didn't want to let go.

I was attracted by this absolutely magical looking meadow, which is part of every filming location Scout for J.R.R. Tolkien's films would certainly have been worth a second look. At the top of the hill you can see the remains of a monastery from the 6th century marvel. Nendrum Abbey is considered one of the nuclei of Christianity in Ireland. At that time, however, this place was also a magnet for craftsmen, simply because there was work there. Gradually, more people settled and a small center developed at the monastery. However, this thriving place not only attracted honorable fellows, there are some indications that raids by predatory Vikings also took place as a result. In the 15th century the site was then replaced by a more accessible site on the mainland and Nendrum was abandoned and left to decay.

The Route 99 of the National Cycle Network leads from Belfast along the Comber Greenway. The 11.5-mile (18.5 km) long, traffic-free path is a wonderful ride towards the mouth of the Comber River. Watch your speed, as the Greenway is shared with walkers.

This unique country park is made up of beautiful woodland landscapes that merge into golden beaches and the crashing waves of the Belfast Lough. The park is home to diverse wildlife such as seals, guillemots and shags. You can explore the woodlands, meadows, glens, beaches and waterfalls on the network of footpaths. There's also a cafe for a midway pitstop.
