The Peddler of Rüschegg Hunger and poverty characterized large parts of this region in the first half of the 19th century. 1816 was even known as the "year without a summer" due to the devastating consequences of a volcanic eruption. Crop failures and storms contributed to the area along the upper Schwarzwasser River sinking into poverty. To find a way out of this hardship, people were inventive.
