Great bike shop at the Oswestry car park where you can get your bike fixed and serviced. Good café where you can talk to fellow cyclists. They also do a weekly cycle ride from here every Sunday morning.

Wide enough for one boat, and with a towpath all the way through, the Whitehouse tunnel lies between Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Chirk. It is an impressive 175 metres long and was completed between 1795 and 1802. It was designed by Thomas Telford and William Jessop. With the aid of a torch, navigate yourself through this 18th century tunnel, under the traffic of the A5. It’s quite an adventure, be sure to go steadily and be aware of others on foot, or on boats! Please dismount and use you headlight to see the path in front.

Hanmer Mere (Welsh: Llyn Hanmer) is a natural lake and a site of Special Scientific Interest in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. The village of Hanmer is at the northern end of the lake. The lake is 18 hectares (44 acres) in extent.

St Alkmund’s Church is a captivating Grade I-listed building. Founded in 912 AD, the church was initially built of white stone, which is why the town is called Whitechurch. However, in 1711 the tower collapsed and had to be rebuilt in red sandstone ashlar, which is why the ‘white church’ looks a little redder than you might expect.

The Mere at Ellesmere is the largest of Shropshire's nine Meres and it is a stunning one at that. It hosts woodland walks, gardens, ice-creams, a café/restaurant and is a haven for wildlife such as Swans, Ducks and Herons. A perfect place to take a break from your ride.

Hanmer is home to one of the nine Meres in this part of the world and it is a beautiful tranquil place. Having the bulk of St Chad's church looking down over the whole scene just adds to the ambience of the whole place.

NOTE: You will have to dismount here to go through the Whitehouse tunnel. A torch or other light would be of benefit. The tunnel is wide enough for one boat, and has a towpath all the way through. NOTE: Cyclists will have to dismount and walk their bikes over Pontcysyllte & Chirk aqueducts. It would be also prudent to walk the longer tunnels. The aqueduct itself is a pioneering masterpiece of engineering conceived by Thomas Telford. It is the highest canal aqueduct in the world and as such has magnificent views. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries the Llangollen canal across the River Dee valley. The 18-arch stone aqueduct was completed in 1805 having taken 10 years to design and build. Today there is a footpath across the aqueduct which you can run, it's often busy though so you will probably have to walk to avoid pushing people into the canal or falling in yourself. Awesome views though!

Colemere's a great place to stop off for a break, there's a bench and a nice picnic lawn by the car park. It's also a very nice walk around the mere if you can spare the time on your ride.

Handy place to stop if you want a nice quite spot by a lake. There's also a small store on the corner if you want to buy a snack or drink.

I often stop at the boat house café. Great lakeside view with loads of ducks, geese and swans, including feral ones. Great place to sit outside for a drink or meal, they even have an outdoor sofa.

Focal point of the nice town of Whitchurch. The town takes its name from the white stone originally used to make the church, way back in around the 10th Century AD. A very impressive building and well worth checking out if you have time to stop.

Mule is a bike shop and cafe in Ostwestry. As well as good coffee and food, they run group rides and other events too. Well worth checking out.

Completed in 1805, it is the longest aqueduct in Great Britain and the highest canal aqueduct in the world. Well worth a visit - unless you're prone to vertigo...
