On 18th September, 1943 a Wellington bomber, X HE 324, was on a training exercise from its base at RAF Silverstone, Northamptonshire. The plane was seen to be on fire as it passed over Lovacott and then East Barton, crashing in flames in the field behind the memorial. All six aircrew perished. The memorial was dedicated in September 2013 after much research to identify and notify surviving relatives of the six victims.

North of Great Torrington, the Torrington Commons was once a waste ground, gifted to the people of the town. Now it boasts 20 miles of footpaths and ancient woodlands. From up here you can also enjoy beautiful views over the valley of the River Torridge.

The Tarka Trail takes in two loops of stunning Devonshire countryside from Barnstaple. Largely a walking route, Great Torrington lies on a 30 mile section where cycling is also permitted between Braunton and Meeth. It follows the path of a disused railway line so memories of its former life are ever present in the tunnels and viaducts that make the trail so interesting.

Best place in North Devon for bike selection and bike service . Helped me set up my new Wahoo Bike computer - nothing too much for these people. Taw Velo Cycle groups organised from here and an annual charity ride called the 'Smugglers ' which is a grand day with BBQ on finish line.

Rock Park is a lovely park near the centre of Barnstaple, nice cycle track along and over the river.

One of the largest medieval bridges in Britain dating back to the mid 13th Century. Comprising of 16 pointed masonry arches, varying in span from 5.5 metres (18 ft) to 7.9 metres (26 ft) giving a total length of 159 metres (522 ft)

Avoid at rush hour as cars fill the whole bridge. Great cycle trail on way into Barnstaple though!

Connecting Barnstaple and Tawstock, the Barnstaple Long Bridge is one the longest medieval bridges in Britain, dating back to around 1280. As such, it is a Grade-I listed building and ancient monument. 522 feet (159 m) in length, the stone bridge has 16 spans. In 2016, the bridge underwent renovations to include cycle lanes.

Barnstaple Long Bridge is a medieval bridge that spans the River Taw, linking Tawstock with Barnstaple. It is a Grade I-listed monument and one of the largest medieval bridges in Britain.
