円形交差点は、中世のザンクト・ガレン市の要塞にあった旧シュピザートーアの跡地に作られました。「Spis」という言葉は、おそらくラテン語のspicariumに由来し、貯蔵庫または穀物倉庫を意味します。門からベアレン広場へと続くシュピザーガッセは、中世には重要な交易路でした。

Covered in red rubber granules and illuminated by artistic light fixtures, the "City Lounge" by artist Pipilotti Rist and architect Carlos Martinez invites visitors to relax and marvel. The Bleicheli district in St. Gallen is a typical shopping and office area. The fact that people still frequent the space until late in the evening is thanks to the airy living room designed by multimedia artist Pipilotti Rist and architect Carlos Martinez. The large Red Square is furnished with sofas, chairs, tables, loungers, and a Porsche – all covered, like the ground, in a vibrant red carpet of plastic granules. During the day, children use this unusual urban landscape to play, while employees of the surrounding shops take breaks on the comfortable seating. In the evenings, light sculptures suspended like floating boulders above the square illuminate the scene, drawing young and young-at-heart people into their glow.
