The present building is a cathedral. The abbey that preceded it was shut down after the reformation and only its ruins remain.

This beautiful cathedral was originally built as a church in the early 13th century and became a cathedral for the newly established Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in 1914. It has some beautiful characteristics including a large rose window, detailed stone carvings, fantastic gardens and the notable Abbey Gate.

Sculpture of Saint Edmund, by Elizabeth Frink, commissioned in 1974 by the then West Suffolk Council to mark the end of its administration. In effect, Bury St Edmunds would no longer be the county town of West Suffolk as it amalgamated with East Suffolk, becoming Suffolk.

St Edmund's Protector the Wolf was created by Nigel Kaines, it marks the start / finish of the Wolf Way Cycle trail.
