In southern Germany, Switzerland, and Flanders, the term "Wette" (Wett, Weed, or Flemish Wedde), first documented in the Franconian and shortly thereafter in the Alemannic language area, is known. This word originally referred to a horse watering place. It is derived from *wetten*, meaning 'to drive animals into the watering place,' which in turn is derived from *waten* (thus literally meaning 'to make someone or something wade'). The Arma Christi Cross is a folk cross type depicting the instruments of Christ's Passion (Arma Christi), such as the crown of thorns, lance, hammer, and nails. It was particularly common in Upper Swabia and the Allgäu region (Wolfegg area) during the 19th century and is often also known as a Capuchin or Passion Cross.
