When Schiller died in Weimar on May 9, 1805, his birthplace was temporarily forgotten. But just a few years later, with the poet's growing posthumous reputation, it became a popular pilgrimage destination. The Marbach Schiller Society acquired the house and opened it to the public as a collection and memorial site, beginning with the Schiller anniversary in 1859. Since then, the house has been completely redesigned several times. This was also the case for the Schiller Year 2009, when the memorial received a completely redesigned permanent exhibition. It was opened on February 2, 2009, by then-Minister-President Günther Oettinger. Closed Mondays. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (April to October) and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (November to April).

The old railway line and a preserved relic

The beer garden, with its beach and loungers, is the perfect place to take a break during your hike. You can relax on the banks of the Neckar River and watch the hustle and bustle of the river with a cool drink in hand. Or get out on the water yourself: There's a canoe and paddleboard rental station right next to the beer garden.

You can see kingfishers and ospreys as a highlight

Marbach has much more to offer than Schiller's birthplace. A beautiful, historically sophisticated old town with many monuments. Perfect for a break and a quick detour from the Neckar Valley cycle path.

Marbach has a very beautiful old town, which is best explored on foot. Unfortunately, much of it was a construction site in May 2024.

To the west and north, the old town slopes steeply down to the Neckar and Strenzelbach; on the heights in the southeast, it was secured in the Middle Ages by the no longer existing city castle. Three gates provided access to the city: the Lower Gate (also called Niklastor) in the northeast, the Upper Gate in the southeast and the Neckartor in the southwest. In 1847, a fourth entrance, the Grabentor, was created by breaking through the wall in the south. The city's layout is dominated by the five streets running east-west, especially the wide Marktstrasse. The latter also houses the most important buildings in the old town, such as the town hall built between 1760 and 1763 and numerous shops. In 2022, the new town hall was inaugurated at Marktstrasse 34. The Citizens' and Public Order Office and the City Planning Office are housed here.
